Homelessness is a growing problem in Ireland and is affecting people of all ages. There are an estimated 1500 people at any given time who are homeless in Ireland today of which 1 in 7 using homelessness services being a child.  Young people are forced to live in emergency accommodation like hotels and B&B’s after eviction or familial issues.  When people think of reasons why homelessness happens, they often think of alcohol or drug abuse-they fail to recognise domestic abuse, mental illness, relationship breakdown or lack of services.  There are several services throughout Waterford that offer support to individuals who identify as homeless as well as several action groups that are trying to end homelessness in Ireland.  From hostels. to action groups, there are many wonderful organisations who want to put an end to the crisis.

If you find yourself homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, do not be afraid to seek out these services.  These services try their very best to get people in off the streets and put them in the best conditions they can provide.  There are several different definitions of what homeless is; here are some of them:

  • Living in emergency accommodation like B&B’s, Hostels or Hotels
  • Couch Surfing (i.e. Staying temporarily with family or friends)
  • Living on the streets/in unsheltered areas
  • Living in homeless shelters
  • If a person is at risk of becoming homeless
